Gangtok, April 1 Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang began the self-enumeration exercise for the 2027 Census on Wednesday, officials said.
Mathur and Tamang completed the process here through the newly launched online census portal, in the presence of officials from the State Census Directorate.
"The 2027 Census will lay a strong foundation for the development journey of the coming decade," the governor said.
"Accurate and comprehensive data is the foundation of effective governance, and through this collective effort, we move closer to ensuring equitable development and better planning for all," the chief minister said.
The 2027 Census is being conducted in two phases – the first stage is known as houselisting and housing census, and the second stage is the population census.
Self-enumeration has been introduced in the current and 16th Census of India, allowing people to submit information through a census portal. It is a secure, web-based facility by which respondents can enter their information online in 16 languages before the door-to-door survey, officials said.
In Sikkim, the window for self-enumeration is open from April 1 to April 15.
