Census Preparations Underway Amidst Manipur Concerns.webp

Imphal, March 27 Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said on Friday that the state government is making efforts to ensure a free and fair census.

On Thursday, the state government had announced that the house listing operations for the 2027 India Census will be conducted in the state between September 1 and 30, with an option for self-enumeration between August 17 and 31 this year.

Responding to media queries on the exercise in the state, Singh said, "We are trying our level best."

The development came amid growing public demands in the northeastern state to defer the census exercise due to concerns over the identification of illegal immigrants and the demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) or a similar mechanism to identify illegal immigrants.

Earlier this month, Congress legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra had called for deferment of the exercise in the state till normalcy is restored.
