New Delhi, March 11 – FC Bayern secured a 6-1 victory away against Atalanta on Tuesday night, putting them in a promising position to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
Josip Stanišić, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry gave Bayern a comfortable 3-0 lead before halftime. Nicolas Jackson, Olise, and Jamal Musiala completed the six goals, while Mario Pašalić scored a consolation goal for the hosts in added time.
Bayern's relentless pressure paid off as the German champions firmly controlled their match against Atalanta.
Stanišić's tap-in set the tone for the visitors, followed by a quick double from Gnabry and Olise, making it 3-0 within 25 minutes. There was no let-up.
Jackson added a fine counter-attacking goal after the restart, followed by Olise's second goal with a similar effort to his first. Musiala scored the sixth goal midway through the second half, but Atalanta's Mario Pasalic scored a consolation goal in added time.
Meanwhile, Galatasaray traveled to Anfield next Wednesday with a narrow advantage after Mario Lemina's seventh-minute header ultimately decided a fast-paced encounter in Istanbul.
Lemina scored after Victor Osimhen redirected Gabriel Sara's corner into his path, the only goal of a frenetic first half that could have featured several more – Florian Wirtz and Davinson Sánchez among those to threaten.
The second half saw more of the same, with Liverpool coming closest when Alexis Mac Allister shot just wide before Hugo Ekitike was brilliantly denied by Ugurcan Cakır.
In another match, Lamine Yamal converted a last-gasp penalty to earn Barcelona a draw at Newcastle, setting up next Wednesday's second leg.
Yamal's added-time penalty, the last kick of the match, denied Newcastle another famous win, with the Barcelona winger holding his nerve to send Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way after Malick Thiaw had fouled Dani Olmo.
The Magpies, who had lost 2-1 to Barca at St James' Park in the first match, were on course for a narrow first-leg victory after Harvey Barnes' first-time effort following Jacob Murphy's pinpoint cross with four minutes to go.
The hosts always appeared the more likely of the two sides to open the scoring, with Barnes' curler hitting the inside of the upright in the second half before the England international got the late breakthrough. Yamal, however, had the final word.
