Chandigarh, March 12 A late-night sighting of a wild animal, suspected to be a leopard, near a dargah in Sector 29 here has put forest and wildlife department officials on alert, prompting a search operation in the area.

An official said on Thursday that the animal was spotted in CCTV camera footage. Teams reached the spot on Wednesday night accompanied by a police control room vehicle.

The area includes residential areas, marketplaces, and open spaces.

The official noted that the footage is not very clear, making it difficult to confirm if the animal is a leopard. In the video, the animal is seen drinking water and roaming the area.

"We did not find the animal or any traces of it. After we received the information on Wednesday night, our team reached the spot. We were there this morning too," the official said. He added that the department is monitoring the area and maintains that there is no reason to panic.

The department has appealed to the public to immediately alert officials if they notice the movement of any wild animal.
