March 27, New Delhi: Vivek Chaturvedi, Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), stated that there have been changes in the excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption. Specifically, the domestic special additional excise component of the current levy on these products, which is applied when they are imported, has been reduced by ₹10 per litre. He explained that these measures were primarily taken to reduce the under-recoveries for oil marketing companies while ensuring that petrol and diesel prices remain stable for consumers during the ongoing crisis.
He further added, "Yesterday, we introduced certain export duties in the form of the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), along with a road and infrastructure cess. These duties have been imposed on the export of diesel and aviation turbine fuel, which have been imported from outside India."
