February 24, New Delhi – China has imposed restrictions on 40 Japanese firms and organizations, citing national security concerns, in an escalating dispute that has already affected travel to Japan.
The tensions follow remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting that Tokyo could respond militarily if Taiwan were attacked.
Beijing’s commerce ministry barred exports of dual-use goods to 20 Japanese entities, including Mitsubishi Corporation and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, alleging support for military development. Another 20 Japanese companies, such as Subaru Corporation, were placed on a watch list requiring tighter export scrutiny.
China said the measures aim to counter Japan’s “remilitarisation” and would not disrupt normal trade. Tokyo indicated it would assess the impact and respond appropriately.
