Imphal, March 27 Five people were arrested in Churachandpur district of Manipur for allegedly damaging vehicles used by security forces during a protest, police said on Friday.

A violent protest erupted in the district after two people were injured in a road accident involving a vehicle belonging to the security forces on Wednesday evening.

Five individuals were apprehended for allegedly "attacking, damaging, and setting fire to a four-wheeler used by security personnel in Tuibong Bazar, Churachandpur district," the police said.

The accident occurred around 6:30 pm on Wednesday when a security force vehicle allegedly hit a scooter, injuring the rider and the pillion rider.

The injured were taken to a hospital, where they were discharged after receiving first aid, an official said, adding that medical examinations revealed that the two were under the influence of alcohol.

Enraged locals set fire to another vehicle belonging to the security forces.

"In the confrontation, some security personnel were seriously injured, and a few vehicles used by them were damaged," the police statement said.
