Hamburg, April 9 – Holger Rune will make his highly anticipated return after a lengthy injury break at the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500 tournament, in May, organizers said on Thursday. Rune, who is still on the entry list for the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome at the start of May, will make his third appearance in Hamburg. He reached the quarter-finals in 2024.
His 2025 season, however, was abruptly interrupted. In October, Rune suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture during the ATP tournament in Stockholm. The injury required surgery followed by several months of rehabilitation. Since then, he has been working intensively on his return to the tour, which is now officially confirmed.
"The hard work begins in Hamburg. I'm excited to be back on clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and to finally experience the atmosphere on site again after such a long break," Rune said.
According to the ATP Win/Loss Index, before his injury, Rune had a 36-22 win-loss record in 2025.
Tournament Director Enric Molina Mur also expressed his enthusiasm about Rune's participation. "We are very pleased that Holger Rune will make his comeback with us in Hamburg. I know how much work he has put into this intensive rehabilitation period, and we feel honoured that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open for his return.
"I am confident that he will once again experience the special atmosphere at Rothenbaum, both from the Hamburg crowd and from the many Danish fans who will travel to the city," said Mur.
Alongside Rune, several German players have already confirmed their participation, including Jan-Lennard Struff and rising talent Justin Engel. World number 3 Alexander Zverev will also compete in his hometown and aims to capture the title.
International competition will be strong, with defending champion Flavio Cobolli and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime also returning to Rothenbaum.
