Congress Candidate's Papers Disqualified in Barpeta.webp

Guwahati, March 25 The nomination papers of Barpeta's Congress candidate, Mahananda Sarkar, were rejected on Wednesday, while the documents submitted by the remaining three nominees in the constituency were found to be valid, election officials said.

The scrutiny of nomination papers for both Barpeta and Dhekiajuli was deferred to Wednesday, while it was completed in the remaining 124 constituencies of Assam on the previous day.

The nominations of all 10 Dhekiajuli candidates, including cabinet minister Ashol Singhal and Congress candidate Batash Orang, were found to be valid.

Sarkar's nomination was rejected on the grounds that there was no signature of the party leader on Form A.

The nomination papers of 789 candidates were found valid in all 126 constituencies of the state, with 26 applications rejected.

A total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 documents across 126 constituencies.

The last date to withdraw candidature is March 26 until 3 pm.

Elections to all 126 constituencies in the state will be held in a single phase on April 9, while votes will be counted on May 4.
