Kolkata, April 8 A vehicle belonging to the security detail of senior Congress leader and former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was damaged after being hit by a truck carrying sand in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, on Wednesday evening, police said.
Chowdhury, who is contesting the assembly elections from the Berhampore constituency, was unharmed in the incident.
The incident occurred on the Berhampore-Kandi State Highway near Hatpara, within the Kandi police station limits, while Chowdhury was returning to Berhampore after attending a public meeting and roadshow in the Anukul Ashram area, they said.
"Initially, it appears the truck lost control and crashed into the rear of the security vehicle," a police officer said.
The impact caused significant damage to the rear of the security vehicle, while the front windscreen of the truck was also shattered due to the collision, police added.
Describing the incident as an accident, Chowdhury said, "It was purely an accident. The security personnel in the vehicle are safe. It could have been a major incident, but we narrowly escaped."
