
New Delhi, March 20 The Congress on Friday released its fourth list of seven party candidates for the April 9 assembly elections in Assam, leaving a total of 11 seats for its alliance with Raijor Dal in the state.
With this, the Congress has announced a total of 94 party candidates in Assam, leaving 11 for Raijor Dal and 15 for other parties.
The party's Central Election Committee selected the candidates for the upcoming elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
Those included in the fourth list include Bidisha Neog from the Jalukbari assembly seat, Rohit Pariga from Tangla, Jayanta Borah from Biswanath constituency, Joy Prakash Das from Nowboicha, Gyandip Mohan from Mahmora, Pran Kurmi from the Titabor seat, and Rahul Roy from the Hailakandi assembly constituency.
Among the seats left for alliance partners Raijor Dal include Manas, Jalgaon, Thing, Kaliabor, Tezpur, Sissibargaon, Margherita, Digboi, Sibsagar, Mariani, and Bokakhat.
The Congress had on Thursday released its third list of 22 candidates for the April 9 Assam Assembly polls, which included four sitting MLAs, of whom two are working presidents of the state unit.
The Congress is leading an alliance of opposition parties, including the CPI(M), Assam Jatiya Parishad, and the CPI (ML) Liberation. Talks are still on with the Raijor Dal.
The Congress had released its first list of 42 candidates on March 3 and another list of 23 candidates on Saturday.
The party has left 15 seats for its alliance partners in Assam. Among its candidates named in the first two lists are state party chief Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, and former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ripun Bora from Barchalla.
The Congress has been out of power in the northeastern state since 2016, while the BJP-led government will be eyeing a third straight term.
In the outgoing Assembly, the ruling BJP's strength is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven, and BPF has three members.
In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15 members, and CPI(M) has one MLA. There is also an Independent legislator.
