Crack Forces Bridge Closure in Madhya Pradesh.webp

Rewa (MP), April 8 Heavy vehicles have been banned from using a bridge over the Bihad river in Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh, until April 30 after a crack appeared on it, disrupting a key route to neighboring Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

Police have diverted heavy vehicles bound for Prayagraj and Varanasi via the Maihar-Satna-Chitrakoot route after the bridge was closed about two days ago, an official said.

The overpass, located about 5 km from the district headquarters, was built about two decades ago, the official said, requesting anonymity.

Repairs are underway, he said, adding that Collector Pratibha Pal is the right person to provide more information, given her role in coordinating with the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India.

Attempts to contact the collector were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the sudden surge in traffic caused a nearly one-kilometer-long jam on National Highway-30 in Maihar late Tuesday night.

Police teams have been deployed along the highway to manage traffic and prevent congestion, said officials, adding that signs indicating route diversions have been installed at multiple locations for the benefit of motorists.
