
Kathmandu, April 3 A Chinese national has been arrested in connection with his alleged involvement in defrauding people through a multi-million rupee cryptocurrency scam, police said on Friday.
A police team arrested Zhu Yi-eng, 35, from the capital's Thamel area on Thursday along with details of cryptocurrency worth Nepalese Rupees (Nrs) 179.97 million, said Pavan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson at the Kathmandu District Police Circle.
The police also recovered three mobile phones and various documents, including papers used to carry out illegal transactions, from him.
During preliminary investigation, it was found that Zhu had been defrauding local Nepalese by contacting them through social media platforms and gaining their trust by offering various attractive deals.
The police have taken the Chinese national into five-day judicial custody with permission from the Kathmandu District Court to further investigate the matter.
