April 7, New Delhi – The United Nations has warned that severe fuel shortages, exacerbated by US restrictions on oil imports since early 2026, are deepening a humanitarian crisis in Cuba.
Speaking at a United Nations press briefing via video call, the UN Resident Coordinator in Cuba, Francisco Pee-shon, stated that the country has gone more than three months without sufficient fuel, further compounding vulnerabilities across nearly all sectors of daily life.
The international body is in discussions with member states to ensure fuel supplies are strictly for humanitarian purposes.
At the same time, the UN is working with Cuba's private sector to expand the use of renewable energy for hospitals and schools, including backup power systems.
