February 17, New Delhi – The U.S. government has labeled Cuba a "failed nation," citing shortages of jet fuel and basic resources that are hindering operations, including flights.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that officials, including Marco Rubio, are in discussions with Cuba to address the situation, which is being described as a humanitarian crisis, while the country continues to face an embargo and severe resource constraints.
Meanwhile, Cuba's fuel shortage has triggered a waste management crisis, with many garbage trucks lacking enough petrol to collect trash, leaving piles of rubbish accumulating on street corners across Havana.
Cuba's media reports that trash is also piling up in other towns, with residents warning on social media about potential public health risks.
The country has long relied on Venezuela for much of its jet fuel, but supplies stopped in mid-December after the United States moved to block Venezuelan exports.
