Dal Lake Water Turns Greenish: Authorities Monitor Situation.webp

The greenish tint in Dal Lake raises concerns in Srinagar, as experts cite algal bloom while authorities assure of treated drinking water supply and continuous quality monitoring.

February 26, Srinagar: The water of Dal Lake has recently turned greenish, raising concerns among residents in parts of Srinagar, particularly in Nishat and Downtown areas, where drinking water is supplied to over six lakh people.

The unusual color caused public apprehension, with scientists from the Lake Conservation and Management Authority attributing the change to a possible algal bloom and environmental factors. Officials said that such variations can occur due to temperature fluctuations and changing ecological conditions and are usually temporary.

Speaking to DD News, Superintending Engineer, Hydraulic Circle Srinagar/Ganderbal, Ambreena Anjum of the Jal Shakti Department, assured residents that there was no need to panic, stating that drinking water supplied from Dal Lake undergoes proper treatment and filtration before distribution.

She further said that the department is closely monitoring the situation and conducting necessary water quality tests to ensure public health and safety.

Scientist at LCMA, Dr. Shafiqa Peer, informed that the Dal Lock Gate has been opened to regulate water flow and that the situation is expected to normalize within a few days. Authorities reiterated that there is no cause for alarm and urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the issue is being addressed scientifically under expert supervision.
