March 12, New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to all the great personalities who participated in the Dandi March, which began on this day in 1930.
The Prime Minister shared a Sanskrit quote emphasizing the triumph of truth:
“Satyam eva jayati, naanrutam satyen patha vittato, devayanah.
Yena akraman, yajato, hi sages, yah satyasya paraman nidhanam॥”
The quote conveys that truth always prevails, and falsehood is ultimately destroyed. It encourages people to follow the path on which the sages attained bliss and realized the supreme truth.
On X, the Prime Minister wrote: "On this day in 1930, the Dandi March began. Respectful remembrance to all the great individuals involved!
Only truth triumphs, not falsehood;
That which the sages use to fulfill their desires is the supreme treasure of truth."
On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi began the historic Dandi March from the Sabarmati Ashram along with 78 volunteers.
The march, which covered nearly 385 kilometers over 24 days, drew people from villages and towns who joined the call for civil disobedience.
At the coastal village of Dandi, Gandhi broke the British salt law by making salt from seawater.
This simple act challenged the British monopoly on salt and inspired protests across the country.
The Salt Satyagraha soon became a powerful symbol of non-violent resistance and strengthened India's movement for independence.
