Anand, March 6 – Govind Parmar, an MLA from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Umreth constituency of Anand district in Gujarat, died on Friday while receiving treatment at a hospital.

He was 82 years old. Parmar had been ill and was being treated at the hospital in Anand, where he passed away, according to party officials.

News of his death prompted condolences from political leaders and BJP workers across the state, particularly in the Anand district and the Umreth region he represented in the Gujarat Assembly.

Born in 1943, Parmar came from a humble background and was considered a prominent figure in grassroots politics with strong connections to rural communities in the Charotar region.

He studied up to Class 7 before dedicating his life to public service and politics.

Parmar was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from the Umreth constituency in the 2017 elections, defeating Congress candidate Kapilaben Chavda by a margin of 1,883 votes, securing his first term in the House.

He retained the seat in the 2022 Assembly elections as the BJP candidate, defeating Jayant Patel of the Nationalist Congress Party by 26,717 votes after polling 95,639 votes.

The Umreth Assembly constituency in Anand district had previously seen frequent shifts between political parties and was considered a challenging constituency before Parmar's victory in 2017.

Reacting to the news, state BJP President and MLA Jagdish Vishwakarma expressed grief over Parmar's death.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Govindbhai Parmar, a popular MLA from Umreth. I pray that the Almighty grants peace to his soul and strength to his family to cope with this loss," Vishwakarma said in a statement.

Parmar's political career was marked by his involvement in grassroots politics and his close engagement with local communities.

Party workers in Anand district and the Umreth area mourned his death and paid tribute to the late legislator.

He is survived by his family. His death has left the Umreth Assembly seat vacant.
