Debt Burden and Welfare Concerns in Madhya Pradesh.webp

Bhopal, Apr 2 The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has plunged the state into heavy debt, which has benefited politicians, officials, and intermediaries, while the ultimate burden will fall on citizens, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) claimed on Thursday.

In a press statement, MP CPI (M) secretary Jaswinder Singh said the state government borrowed approximately Rs 250 crore daily in the 2025-26 fiscal year to run the administration, bringing the total borrowing for the year to Rs 91,500 crore.

"The state's total outstanding debt has exceeded Rs 5.56 lakh crore, while the population stands at around nine crore. This translates to an average debt of approximately Rs 6.17 lakh per person, while the average annual income stands at Rs 1.69 lakh, according to the economic survey presented in the state assembly," Singh said.

"Even if the entire income of citizens is used for repayment, it would take four years to clear the debt. The state pays approximately Rs 66,720 crore annually as interest on the debt at an estimated rate of 12 per cent. The government continues to plan further borrowing," he further claimed.

Questioning whether the loans were being used for public welfare, the CPI (M) leader alleged that farmers do not receive remunerative prices in mandis, while workers and employees do not receive minimum wages. ASHA, USHA, and anganwadi workers are protesting for an increase in their honorarium, he added.

Infrastructure created through borrowed funds suffers from poor quality, with bridges collapsing and roads caving in after rains, while there is a shortage of teachers in schools, doctors in hospitals, and vacancies in government departments, Singh said.

"A large part of the debt burden has benefited politicians, officials, and intermediaries, while the burden (of repayment) will ultimately fall on the people of the state," the party statement contended.
