Delhi: Communal Tensions in Uttam Nagar – Mufti Calls for Intervention.webp

Srinagar, March 20 PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention regarding the escalating communal tensions in Delhi's Uttam Nagar.

"Right-wing fanatics and elements in Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, are openly calling for the bloodshed of Muslims and threatening that rivers of blood will flow on Eid. Understandably, this has caused considerable panic and anxiety among many Muslim families who have fled to escape the impending violence," Mufti said in a post on X.

She urged the prime minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene "before the situation deteriorates further, leading to the loss of innocent lives."

Communal tensions have gripped the Uttam Nagar area since the death of 26-year-old Tarun, who was killed in a clash between his family and their neighbors in the JJ Colony area on Holi on March 4. The violence erupted after water from a balloon thrown by a girl from Tarun's family splashed on a woman from his neighbor's family, according to police.

Some Hindu organizations later staged a protest against the killing and set fire to two vehicles belonging to the accused family members. Police have apprehended 14 people, including two minors, in connection with the killing.

Meanwhile, security arrangements have been further tightened around the Uttam Nagar East metro station following directions from the Delhi High Court to ensure adequate preparedness in view of apprehensions of unrest during the festival.
