Delhi: Fire in Tank Wagon Under Control, Investigation Launched.webp

New Delhi, March 31 A fire broke out in a petrol-laden tank wagon at Shakur Basti railway station on Tuesday, but was quickly contained by multiple agencies, a Delhi Police officer said.

The incident occurred at the railway yard when petrol leaked from the lid (manhole) of a stationary tank wagon, leading to the accumulation of highly flammable vapours, the officer said.

"The vapours subsequently ignited, triggering a fire in the wagon. Railway staff present at the spot acted promptly and used available firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers and cylinders, to control the blaze at an early stage," the officer said.

He further said their quick response prevented the fire from spreading to nearby wagons and railway infrastructure, adding that the area was immediately secured to keep away unauthorized persons.

"No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, and there was no significant damage to railway property. The situation is now completely under control, and the site has been declared safe after a preliminary assessment," he said.

Coordination with concerned departments was initiated soon after the incident, and necessary preventive measures have been taken to avoid recurrence. A detailed technical inspection of the affected tank wagon is currently underway, while a probe has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of the leakage and fix responsibility. Further investigation is in progress, according to the officer.
