New Delhi, March 25 The Municipal Corporation of Delhi gave its in-principle approval on Wednesday to launch "Nigam Shri Schools" – premium, modern schools for meritorious students from economically weaker sections.
Officials said the proposal was accepted in a meeting; however, the final details and implementation steps are yet to be finalized.
The Nigam Shri Schools, announced in January this year, are modeled on the Centre’s PM Shri schools and the Delhi government’s CM Shri schools, with admissions focused on meritorious students.
"Through Nigam Shri Schools, our aim is to bring municipal schools on par with the best institutions by providing modern infrastructure and quality education to every child," said Verma.
Additionally, funds of approximately Rs 45 crore were approved for the repair of municipal schools, maintenance of restrooms, and other essential infrastructure work.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Education Committee Chairman Yogesh Verma and attended by senior officials of the civic body's education department.
The committee also reviewed the Mid-Day Meal scheme and ordered action against NGOs found negligent in maintaining food quality.
Verma added that funds have also been transferred to the accounts of students who were yet to receive financial assistance for uniforms and stationery.
The MCD Shri schools will identify and nurture students’ abilities while preparing them for higher education, officials said.
In the first phase, 24 schools will be developed as Nigam Shri Schools, expected to start from the upcoming academic session.
These schools will be equipped with modern facilities such as smart classrooms, digital learning tools, libraries, improved sanitation, safe drinking water, enhanced security, sports infrastructure, and green initiatives.
