New Delhi, March 10 The office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has appealed to the Divisional Commissioner to exempt around 7,500 school teachers, who are deployed as Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) program, from Census-related work, officials said on Monday.
A letter from the CEO's office to the Divisional Commissioner on Tuesday stated that the Election Commission of India had informed last month that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is expected to begin from April 2026 and requested that the preparatory work related to it be completed as soon as possible.
Currently, the mapping of electors from the 2025 electoral roll is being done in comparison to the electors from the year 2002, which is a crucial exercise before the start of the SIR, and must be completed in a timely manner, the letter said.
The Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have to visit houses on a daily basis to obtain electoral details from each voter in their assigned area for mapping in the 2025 electoral roll.
The CEO's office said that Census-related work is also likely to begin in Delhi shortly. The Delhi government is preparing for the houselisting and housing phase of the 2027 Census, which is scheduled to begin next month, for which over 40,000 employees will receive field training in the coming days, officials said.
The houselisting and housing phase is scheduled to begin on April 15.
A senior official from the revenue department said that the exercise is expected to be completed by June, covering the entire national capital.
Currently, there are 13,033 polling stations in Delhi. Around 7,500 teachers from Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) schools have been deployed as BLOs and BLO Supervisors, the CEO's office said.
If these teachers are deployed for Census-related work, it may hamper the crucial work of the Special Intensive Revision, the CEO's office said, requesting the Divisional Commissioner to exempt them from Census duties.
The Revenue Secretary-cum-Divisional Commissioner of the Delhi government is the nodal officer for the 2027 Census in the national capital of Delhi.
