New Delhi, March 23 By 2025-26, the total number of motor vehicles on Delhi roads is 87.61 lakh, an increase of 7.93% compared to 2024-25, according to the economic survey report released on Monday.

According to the report, the number of vehicles per thousand population was 522 as of March 19, 2026. The total number of vehicles registered by 2025-26 was approximately 87.61 lakh, an increase from the 81.18 lakh registered in the previous financial year.

By March 19, 2026, 66.20 lakh vehicles were deregistered due to the ban on diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old.

"The highest increase was recorded in the two-wheeler category, including motorcycles and scooters. By March 19, 5,927,775 two-wheelers were registered, accounting for 67.65% of the total number of vehicles," the report states.

In the public transport sector, DTC is the largest public transport entity in the city and NCR, transporting an average of 24.29 lakh passengers per day in 2025-26 (March 20), a decrease from the previous year of 2024-25 when the average daily ridership was 25.58 lakh.

"In March 2026, the Delhi Transport Corporation has a fleet of 6,100 buses, comprising 1,002 non-AC low-floor (CNG) buses and 760 AC low-floor (CNG) buses," the report says.

The report further added that 2,750 AC low-floor electric 12-meter buses and 1,588 AC low-floor electric nine-meter buses are part of the fleet.

"In the transport sector, there are 86 buses on 27 routes for the night bus service. Under its gender sensitization program for bus crews undertaken by DTC, 30 ladies' special buses are also operated during peak hours on 30 routes. DTC is also operating an International Bus Service on the Delhi-Kathmandu route," the report states.

The number of bus breakdowns has also increased; in the current financial year, 929 bus breakdowns were registered, an increase from 897 in 2024-25. This year, a total of 1,503 electric buses broke down in the 12-meter and 9-meter categories, the report added.

Under the push for electric vehicles, by March 19, a total of 47,01,04 electric vehicles have been registered in Delhi, the report added.
