Diarrhea Outbreak in Odisha's Jajpur Leaves One Dead.webp

Jajpur, April 10 One person died, and ten others fell ill due to diarrhea in Jajpur district, Odisha, officials said.

The diarrhea outbreak was reported from Baunsadola village under the Anjira panchayat of the Dharmasala block. The deceased has been identified as Badal Mohanty (36), a resident of the village, officials said.

The waterborne disease was first reported on Wednesday night when Badal was admitted to the Dharmasala Community Health Centre (CHC). Later, two others from the village were admitted to the hospital after being affected by diarrhea on Wednesday night.

Eight other residents of the same village were also admitted to the CHC on Thursday. However, Badal, who was admitted to the CHC as the first patient, succumbed to his illness on Thursday night.

While four of the affected people were discharged from the hospital after treatment, six others are still undergoing treatment at the Dharmasala CHC, officials said.

Jajpur Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Bijay Kumar Mishra reached the village on Friday to assess the situation.

"Out of the 10 affected people, four, including three women, have been discharged from the hospital after treatment. The remaining patients are being treated at the Dharmasala CHC, and they are recovering well," said the CDMO.

The district health authorities suspect that the diarrhea outbreak is due to the consumption of contaminated water.

The health department has advised the villagers to stay alert and not to panic. The CDMO advised the residents of the affected village to drink plenty of warm water and consume fresh food.

Asha and Anganwadi workers are visiting every household in the village and distributing halogen tablets along with medicine, while work is underway to disinfect all water bodies in the area, he added.
