March 26, New Delhi – Bastar in Chhattisgarh, which has been grappling with Naxalism for nearly four decades, is now experiencing a remarkable transformation. Today, the tribal artisans of Bastar are making their mark not only across India but also globally through their traditional Dokra art.
Dokra art from Chhattisgarh is a unique form of craftsmanship that reflects India's rich cultural heritage. Believed to be nearly 4,000 years old, this art form is known for its intricate bronze work and fine detailing.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a special gift to the President of France, Emmanuel Macron – a unique artifact made using Dokra art.
The Dokra sculptures, crafted by tribal artisans, are made using copper and brass. This traditional metal art has been passed down through generations and uses the ancient lost-wax casting technique.
Once a hotbed of Naxal violence, Bastar has been witnessing winds of change lately. Dokra art is providing people with an opportunity to earn a livelihood in a peaceful environment.
