EC Discusses Supplementary Voter List Publication with Calcutta HC

EC Discusses Supplementary Voter List Publication with Calcutta HC.webp

Kolkata, March 12 Following the publication of post-SIR electoral rolls in West Bengal on February 28, Election Commission officials discussed the modalities for publishing supplementary voter lists with Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on Thursday.

"The discussion today focused on how the supplementary lists will be published, and what changes need to be made in the software for that," said Special Roll Observer for West Bengal, Subrata Gupta, after the meeting.

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal was present at the meeting, an official said.

The SIR exercise in the state has been under the court's supervision amid allegations of irregularities and a "lack of trust" between the state government and the Election Commission.

In a fresh set of directions, the Supreme Court had on Tuesday ordered the setting up of independent appellate tribunals, headed by former high court judges, to hear appeals against exclusions from voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.

According to official data released on February 28, 63.66 lakh names, around 8.3 per cent of the electorate, have been deleted since the SIR process began in November last year, reducing the voter base from about 7.66 crore to just over 7.04 crore.

In addition, over 60.06 lakh electors have been placed under the "under adjudication" category, meaning their eligibility will be determined through legal scrutiny in the coming weeks.
