Aizawl, March 17 The Mizoram State Election Commission is likely to announce the election schedule for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday, an official said.
State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana will address a press conference on Wednesday to announce the polling date, the EC official said.
While the municipality's current term ended on March 1, the election panel had deferred the elections due to administrative priorities, including the assembly's budget session, which concluded on Monday, and ongoing board examinations.
The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has yet to announce its nominees. The main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has released its full list of candidates, while the Congress has named 13 candidates.
According to the Mizoram State Election Commission, there are over 2.39 lakh voters, including 1.26 lakh females, across the 19 wards.
In the last AMC elections held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority with 11 seats, the ZPM followed with 6 seats, while the Congress managed to bag 2 seats.
