Escalating Tensions: Iran and U.S. Clash Over Strait of Hormuz.webp

March 23, New Delhi: The conflict in West Asia has entered its fourth week with no sign of resolution. Iran has threatened to target energy sites in the region after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of attacks on Iranian power plants if Tehran does not open the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that the energy infrastructure and desalination plants of U.S. allies in the Gulf could be "irreversibly destroyed" if Iranian power plants are targeted.

Iran's primary military command, Khatm ul-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued a statement warning that power plants in countries hosting U.S. bases would be considered legitimate targets if the United States attacks Iran’s power facilities.

This warning comes after Trump's threat on Saturday to "hit and obliterate" Iranian power plants if the country fails to fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, which expires at 5:14 AM IST on March 24th.

On Sunday, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the Strait of Hormuz is open to all "except those who violate Iran's territory." Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that the waterway is "not closed," attributing recent disruptions to the U.S. and Israel.

Earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would completely shut the Strait of Hormuz if Trump executes his threats to attack Iranian energy facilities.
