Health Department Raids Unlicensed Catering Facility; Vande Bharat Branding Found at Site

Kochi, May 14 — A catering unit in Kochi, reportedly supplying food to the Indian Railways, has come under fire after health officials uncovered expired food materials and improper waste disposal practices during a surprise inspection on Wednesday.

A Health Department official revealed that the catering unit, operating under the name Brandavan, was found to be storing days-old and expired food and allegedly dumping waste into a nearby canal, in gross violation of municipal and health regulations.

Illegal Operations and Contaminated Storage

According to the official, the unit was functioning without a valid corporation licence. The inspection, prompted by a tip-off received on Tuesday night, led to a full-scale raid on Wednesday morning. Unhygienic conditions were observed at the main kitchen, and expired food items were stored at a godown nearby, where staff members were residing.

The official confirmed that the unit would be shut down and sealed immediately due to the multiple violations.

Resident Complaints Trigger Inspection

The issue came to light after residents complained of a foul smell, prompting the municipal councillor to alert health authorities. "Yesterday, residents informed me of the bad stench. When I came to inspect, I too sensed it. I immediately called the health officials," the councillor stated.

He added that Brandavan had previously been issued multiple warnings and fines for dumping waste into the canal, but the unit continued its operations unabated.

Vande Bharat Packaging Found

Further raising concerns, the councillor claimed that boxes and glasses bearing the 'Vande Bharat' logo — typically used for packaging food served on Indian Railways' prestigious trains — were found at the site.

Railways Launches Internal Inquiry

Following the media reports, a Railway official confirmed that the matter had been forwarded to the procurement department concerned. The department is expected to verify the catering unit’s involvement in the supply chain and take necessary action.

There has been no response from Brandavan regarding the allegations or the raid.

Public Health and Safety Concerns Mount

The revelations have sparked public outrage, especially considering the potential link to food served on trains. Authorities have assured stringent follow-up actions to ensure food safety and prevent violations.
