New Delhi, March 17 The British Film Institute's Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, in partnership with the British Council, announced the return of "Five Films For Freedom," the annual online short film program, which will run from March 18 to 29.
The program will feature films from filmmakers in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam, and France, and will be available to audiences worldwide to stream online for free via the British Council's digital platforms and on the BFI Player in the UK, according to a press release.
This year's program presents a bold selection of global LGBTQIA+ stories that span intimacy, identity, resilience, and belonging across generations and geographies. The first "Five Films For Freedom" was launched in 2015.
Alison Barrett, Country Director, British Council, said, "Film remains 'one of the most powerful ways culture shapes attitudes, empathy, and belonging, particularly for younger generations.'"
"‘Five Films For Freedom’ uses the universal language of cinema to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, spark conversation, and build understanding. These stories remind us that, no matter where or who we are, the need for love and self-expression is universal," she added.
Rafiul Alom Rahman, Director of The Queer Muslim Project, added, "We are delighted to collaborate with the British Council to present FiveFilmsForFreedom, a powerful platform for showcasing diverse LGBTQIA+ stories from around the world while sparking conversations on inclusion."
Kristy Matheson, Director of BFI Festivals, said, "These stories move across borders instantly. They show everyday courage, tenderness, and identity, and when they are seen globally, they create connection in places where representation still really matters. The five films will be available to stream for free worldwide via the British Council's digital platforms and on the BFI Player in the UK.”
