New Delhi, April 9 The NHRC said on Thursday that it has issued notices to the chief secretary and director general of police of Jharkhand over reports that a person died and seven others sustained serious injuries after an explosion at a private steel plant in the Ramgarh district recently.

The incident occurred in the morning while work was in progress. The explosion reportedly occurred due to "excessive furnace temperature" allegedly as a result of a "technical fault or negligence" in adhering to the prescribed safety standards, it said in a statement.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on one person's death and serious injuries to seven others after the explosion at a private steel plant in the Hesla area of Ramgarh district on April 6, it said.

The rights panel has observed that, if the news report is true, it raises a serious issue of violation of the human rights of the victims.

Therefore, it has issued notices to the chief secretary and the director general of police (DGP) of Jharkhand, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, including the status of the health of the injured persons, the findings of the investigation, and any compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased worker and the injured.

According to the media report, carried on April 6, the injured persons were initially taken to nearby medical centres and later referred to a hospital in Ranchi for advanced treatment, where one of the injured workers died during the course of treatment, the statement added.
