Mumbai, April 11 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday countered NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar's remarks about regressive elements entering the Warkari sect, claiming that some individuals with Urban Naxal links had infiltrated the movement but were subsequently rejected.

The term "Warkari" is used for devotees of Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur who undertake an annual pilgrimage on foot to the temple town. This tradition dates back several centuries and has inspired great Bhakti poets such as Tukaram and Namdev.

In an article published in a magazine, Pawar expressed regret that regressive elements had entered the Warkari tradition in recent times, and that the discourses of some preachers within the sect encouraged religious fanaticism.

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said Pawar's article was completely inaccurate and demonstrated a lack of understanding of the tradition.

The Warkari sect, with a history of 800 to 900 years, represents a philosophy rooted in brotherhood, spiritual purity, and the teachings of the Bhagwat tradition, he said.

"Some individuals who joined the Warkari movement later had links with Urban Naxals. Fortunately, the movement rejected them," he said. Fadnavis, who holds the Home department, said the government had "records" on such individuals.

"The Warkari tradition is rich and inclusive. It emphasizes the purification of the mind and harmony with nature," he added.

Fadnavis stated that Pawar's article was "completely incorrect" and he was saddened by its content, but everyone has the right to express their views.

"In literary forums, diverse opinions are presented. Pawar saheb's article may have been included considering his stature as a former chief minister and Union minister. What he should write is his prerogative," the BJP leader said.
