Hoshiarpur, March 13 An elderly man was killed after a private bus allegedly hit his scooter near Chak Gujjran village here on Friday, triggering protests by his family members and local shopkeepers who blocked the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road for over two hours, police said.
The deceased, Resham Singh, was 73 years old and a resident of Kirti Nagar in Hoshiarpur.
According to police, the incident occurred when the bus belonging to a private transport company allegedly hit the scooter on which Singh was travelling, killing him instantly.
Following the accident, the bus driver and conductor allegedly fled, abandoning the vehicle.
Soon after the incident, family members of the deceased and shopkeepers from Adda Chak Gujjran staged a protest and blocked the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road, leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway.
The protest was led by Balram Singh, the son of the deceased, who demanded strict action against those responsible for the accident.
Bullowal Station House Officer Parvinder Singh and an official from the transport company reached the spot and held talks with the protesters.
The blockade was lifted after the transport company official assured protesters that the bus driver would be produced before the Bullowal police on March 14.
Traffic resumed around 1:10 pm after the protest was called off.
