
Gurugram, March 21 An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two passengers were injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) collided with the passenger vehicle on the Southern Peripheral Road here, police said on Saturday.
The driver of the SUV (Thar) fled the scene after leaving his vehicle there. An FIR has been registered at the Badshahpur police station, and a search for the absconding driver is underway, they added.
According to the police, the deceased auto driver, Maheshwari Dayal, 53, a native of Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh, was the sole breadwinner of his family, and is survived by his wife and five children, including two daughters.
According to eyewitnesses, Dayal was driving two passengers from DLF Green on the SPR Road around 9:30 pm on Friday. As he approached the M3M building, a speeding SUV collided with the auto-rickshaw.
The impact was so severe that the passenger vehicle was completely damaged, and the driver was seriously injured and died on the spot. The SUV driver fled the scene after the accident, they added.
After nearby residents informed the police about the incident, they arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation.
The injured passengers were rushed to the hospital and are reportedly in stable condition. Police called a forensic team, and after reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras, they said.
"Police investigations revealed that the SUV (Thar) was speeding, and the driver lost control while overtaking. We are searching for the driver based on the SUV's number plate," a senior police officer said.
