Jammu, March 11 National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary were unharmed after being targeted by a gunman outside a marriage hall on the outskirts of Jammu on Wednesday night, officials said.
The accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi, was subdued by security personnel and taken into custody for questioning, they said.
The incident occurred in the upscale Greater Kailash area of Jammu, where Abdullah and the deputy chief minister were exiting a wedding function, officials said.
They said Jamwal, who is in his 70s, was waiting outside the venue and attempted to fire at Abdullah. However, two police officers – an inspector and a sub-inspector – overpowered him, but he still managed to fire one shot before being disarmed and taken into custody.
No one was injured in the shooting, officials said, adding that Jamwal was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Abdullah and Choudhary were in Jammu to greet party leader B S Chouhan on the occasion of his son's wedding, officials said.
