
Farrukhabad (UP), March 17 A powerful explosion rocked the residence of former Samajwadi Party MLA Vijay Singh here on Tuesday evening, leaving at least five people injured, with one of them in critical condition, police said.
Singh is currently serving a life sentence in connection with the murder of BJP leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, officials said.
The explosion occurred shortly after 8 pm, causing panic in the area.
Those injured have been identified as Singh's sons Avinash alias Vicky and Abhishek alias Sikki, Bhaiya Lal Chauhan, a resident of Sindhi Colony, Rashu Shukla and Ishu Chaurasia, residents of Nala Machharatta, police said.
Bhaiya Lal, who sustained serious injuries, was referred to a higher medical facility after initial treatment, while the others are being treated at a private hospital, they added.
Circle Officer (City) Aishwarya Upadhyay rushed to the spot with a heavy police force soon after receiving information and assessed the situation.
A large number of locals gathered at the site following the explosion.
District Magistrate Ashutosh Dwivedi and Superintendent of Police Aarti Singh also reached the spot.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and are examining the scene to determine how the incident occurred, they added.
The exact cause and nature of the explosion are yet to be determined.
