Mumbai, February 24 A sessions court here on Tuesday sentenced a horse handler to two years of rigorous imprisonment for the tragic death of a six-year-old girl in 2017.
Janhavi Mistry, the daughter of Mahendra Mistry, CEO of a private firm, died after falling from a horse during a joyride in South Mumbai.
Sessions Judge Avinash Kulkarni convicted Sohan Jaiswal under Section 304-II of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide). The detailed order was not yet available.
According to police, the girl, while on a horseback ride in a park, was thrown off and fell between the animal's legs.
She suffered severe injuries and died in the hospital.
Prosecutor Anand Sukhdeve examined six witnesses, including the girl's parents. The prosecution stated that Jaiswal did not have a license to offer horse rides and failed to provide safety gear to the girl.
The defense argued that the poor condition of the road, with potholes and cracks, caused the horse to trip. They argued that a horse is not under human control.
However, the court found Jaiswal guilty.
