Thrissur (Kerala), April 1 Union Minister Suresh Gopi said on Wednesday that there are no concerns among churches regarding the amendments to the FCRA, asserting that only those who violate norms need to worry.
Speaking to reporters here, he said the amendment was not targeted at any particular religion or community, but was aimed at safeguarding the interests and properties of the people of the country.
The remarks came from the BJP leader amidst various church heads raising serious concerns about the proposed amendments in the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), which is under consideration by the Lok Sabha.
"There are no concerns over the FCRA amendment. This is not an issue concerning Christians, Hindus, Sikhs or Buddhists. It is meant for the protection of the people of the country and their properties," he said.
The minister maintained that those who have complied with regulations and maintained proper accounts have nothing to fear.
"Only those who commit wrongdoing need to be worried, irrespective of their religion or community. Those who have misused the system alone should be concerned," he added.
Gopi further said that churches have maintained proper accounts and therefore need not have any apprehensions about the amendments.
"No Catholic Church is scared (about FCRA) because, as per my understanding, they have submitted proper accounts," he said.
The Union minister also said he has sent an audio message to Christian bishops explaining the provisions of the amendment and assuring them that there was no need for fear or undue concern.
