Mumbai, April 7 A non-air-conditioned sleeper coach was partially damaged in a fire at a major workshop of the Central Railway (CR) in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at 3:10 pm at the CR's workshop in Matunga, they said.

The fire brigade was immediately called to the scene, and the fire was brought under control by 4 pm, a CR spokesperson said.

Chief Public Relations Officer of CR, Swapnil Nila, said that nearly 70 per cent of the upper portion of the train coach was damaged in the fire, which spread rapidly due to strong winds.

Preliminary investigations indicated that sparks from welding work underway at the workshop ignited nearby materials, leading to the fire, he informed.

Nila said that the affected coach was immediately moved to an open area.

The 110-year-old Carriage Workshop undertakes periodic overhauling and maintenance of air-conditioned/non-air-conditioned train coaches and suburban rakes.
