Kolkata, February 17 – The parents of the junior doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was brutally raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August 2024, appealed to a trial court here on Tuesday, requesting a review of the Kolkata Police's and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s respective roles in the investigation.
The parents also urged the court to examine whether any political influence was used during the investigation.
The trial court has agreed to hear the parents' appeals in the coming days.
On Tuesday afternoon, the parents arrived at the Sealdah trial court with their lawyer. They stated that certain aspects of the investigation, first by the Kolkata Police and then by the CBI, need to be re-examined.
"Therefore, we approached the trial court with this appeal. The judge of the trial court has agreed to hear our appeal in the coming days," the victim's father said.
This is the same trial court that, in 2004, sentenced Sanjay Roy, a former Kolkata Police volunteer, to life imprisonment in the case.
The CBI is currently investigating the possibility of a larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder.
However, the victim's parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI's investigation and accused the central investigative agency of neglecting an independent and effective line of investigation, instead simply echoing the Kolkata Police's initial findings, which claimed that Roy was the sole perpetrator in the crime.
The case of rape and murder is also being heard in parallel at the Calcutta High Court.
