Srinagar, Mar 7: Authorities on Saturday suspended vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road following fresh snowfall at Razdan Top, officials said.
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure after snowfall made the high-altitude pass slippery and unsafe for traffic. The road connects Bandipora with the remote Gurez Valley.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad confirmed that traffic on the road has been suspended until further orders.
“Due to snowfall at Razdan Top and as a precautionary measure, movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road shall remain suspended till further orders,” the SDM said.
Officials said snowfall at the pass reduced visibility and created slippery conditions, prompting authorities to halt traffic to prevent any untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, a moderate to strong Western Disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from March 9 to 12, bringing widespread rain and snowfall across the region.
Heavy snowfall is likely over the higher reaches, while the plains and lower areas may experience intermittent spells of rain. According to weather indications, the peak intensity of the system is expected on March 11 and 12.
Today, light to moderate rainfall is also likely in Kupwara, Handwara and adjoining areas of Baramulla and Bandipora, officials said.
Authorities said the situation is being monitored and the Bandipora–Gurez road will be reopened after weather conditions improve and necessary clearance operations are carried out.
