March 18, New Delhi – Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced a series of emergency measures to protect the island's economy and ensure energy security, amid the ongoing conflict that is disrupting global fuel supply chains.
Sri Lanka has approved emergency purchases and issued tenders to acquire over 90,000 metric tons of crude oil to address a shortfall.
The President stated that delays in the shipment of crude oil and fuel have created temporary supply gaps, leading to the expedited issuance of procurement tenders.
Meanwhile, the government has also introduced a QR-code system to manage fuel distribution and has announced plans to reduce public sector fuel consumption by at least 25 percent, including designating Wednesdays as a government holiday.
