
Jhansi (UP), April 6 One student died and another is missing after a boat capsized in a dam here, officials said on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening in the Raksa area when four college students, who had left home under the pretext of attending coaching classes, went to the Gariya dam near Athaudna village for a picnic.
According to police, the students boarded an unattended small boat and ventured into deep waters while recording videos for social media. The boat lost balance and capsized, throwing all four into the water.
Hearing the students' cries for help, a nearby boatman managed to rescue two of them – Shravan Tiwari (19) and Shaurya Chandra (18).
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gopesh Tiwari said the body of Atif Mansoori (19), a resident of Nagra, was fished out on Monday afternoon by local divers and a State Disaster Response Force team.
Circle Officer (Sadar) Ramveer Singh said another student, Vedansh Yadav (18), a resident of Premganj in Sipri Bazar area, is still missing and search operations are underway.
Police said teams, along with local divers, had conducted a search operation late into the night on Sunday but could not trace the missing student.
