On Thursday, MP Saleng A. Sangma met C. H. Vijayashankar to discuss the recent law and order situation in the Garo Hills region and to explore ways to restore peace and normalcy in the area.

Speaking to the media after the meeting at Raj Bhavan, Sangma said that the discussion with the Governor mainly focused on the current situation in Garo Hills following the recent unrest and the steps that could be taken to restore stability in the region. He said that both of them discussed the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure that peace prevails in the area.

Sangma stated that the meeting was productive and covered several important issues concerning the people of the region. According to him, the Governor expressed concern over the recent incidents and emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony among different communities living in the state.

In addition to the law and order situation, the MP said that they also discussed matters related to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, particularly in the context of the functioning and powers of the autonomous district councils in Meghalaya. He said that the need to safeguard the constitutional provisions meant for the protection of tribal rights and interests was also highlighted during the meeting.

Sangमा also raised the issue of alleged infiltration of Rohingyas into the state. He said that the matter has been a cause of concern among the people and stressed that the authorities must remain vigilant while addressing the issue in accordance with the law.

With regard to the controversy surrounding the participation of non-tribals in the upcoming GHADC elections and the subsequent issuance of a notification barring non-tribals from contesting, Sangma said that the Governor wants to ensure that all rules, legal provisions and procedures are properly followed while enacting or implementing any legislation related to the matter. He said the Governor stressed that due process must be adhered to so that any decision taken stands on firm legal ground.

Calling for peace and restraint among the people, Sangma urged all sections of society to maintain calm and avoid any actions that could further escalate tensions. He said that the situation requires collective responsibility and cooperation from the public as well as community leaders.

He also appreciated the efforts of the state government, the police administration and church leaders for their role in handling the situation and preventing it from deteriorating further. According to him, the coordinated efforts of the authorities and community leaders have helped in gradually restoring normalcy in the affected areas.

Sangma expressed hope that with continued dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders, peace and stability would soon be fully restored in the Garo Hills region.
