The bill, which requires a Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate for candidates contesting council elections, was unanimously passed on Monday during a Special Session of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. The session, held at the District Council Hall in Tura, was convened under Rule 36 (5) of the Assam & Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951. With the passage of the bill, it is now mandatory for all candidates contesting GHADC elections to have a valid ST certificate.
