Gondia, Apr 6 Locals staged a sit-in protest in a village in the Gondia district of Maharashtra on Monday against the police for arresting a protester who was demanding the permanent closure of a liquor shop.
Villagers demonstrated at the Amgaon police station following a heated exchange with the police team that had come to arrest the chief agitator, Santosh Donode, and his family.
Locals had submitted a memorandum to the administration, requesting action against the liquor shop by April 10, and had warned of rail and road blockades and a self-immolation protest by five members.
When a police team went to Donode's residence on April 5, he allegedly tore up the notice issued to him, an official said.
On Monday, when police personnel came to arrest Donode, several villagers gathered at the spot and demonstrated.
