Gorakhpur (UP), March 18 Police have arrested two men for their alleged involvement in the murder of BJP leader and property dealer Rajkumar Chauhan in Gorakhpur, officials said on Wednesday.
Chauhan was repeatedly stabbed when he went for a walk on Tuesday morning near his home in the Chilua Tal police station area. He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
"Police arrested Raj Chauhan, also known as Nirahua, and Vipin Yadav, both dump truck drivers, on Tuesday night," SSP Kaustubh said.
According to police, the duo confessed to the crime during interrogation, claiming that the killing was an act of revenge.
The accused claimed that Chauhan's nephew had assaulted one of them two months ago, and the BJP leader's support for his relative fueled their resentment.
After harboring a grudge for nearly four months, on Tuesday morning, they attacked Chauhan when he was out for a morning walk. One of the suspects fired a shot before both attacked him with knives, inflicting multiple injuries. Chauhan died at a hospital during treatment, the SSP said.
While police have not yet recovered the weapon, CCTV camera footage helped them identify the suspects, the officer said.
"The FIR named eight accused, whose roles are under investigation. Security has been provided to the victim's family," he said.
The killing had triggered protests, with locals blocking the Gorakhpur-Sonauli road before police restored order.
