New Delhi, March 13 The Lok Sabha passed the second batch of supplementary demands for grants on Friday, allowing the government to spend an additional ₹2.01 lakh crore in the current fiscal year.
Through the second batch of supplementary demands, the government sought approval from the Lok Sabha for spending a total of ₹2.81 lakh crore extra in the current fiscal year. With an estimated additional revenue of ₹80,000 crore in the supplementary budget, the net additional spending will be ₹2.01 lakh crore.
Despite the additional expenditure, the fiscal deficit for the current financial year (2025-26) will be within the Revised Estimates (RE), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while replying to the debate.
The second batch of supplementary demands was passed by voice vote in the Lok Sabha amidst disruption. Opposition members were protesting over the availability of LPG in the country amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day after the passage of the supplementary demands.
In the RE 2025-26, the fiscal deficit has been estimated at 4.4 per cent of GDP, which is in line with the Budget Estimates of 2025-26.
"There is no increase in expenditure beyond the BE of 2025-26 due to the second supplementary," Sitharaman said, amidst continuous slogans by Opposition members over concerns about LPG shortages.
In the Revised Estimates for the current fiscal year, the government had reduced the total expenditure to ₹49.65 lakh crore, from ₹50.65 lakh crore in the BE.
According to data from the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), the government had spent ₹36.90 lakh crore until January.
