Kathmandu, March 29 Nepal's newly formed government has established a commission under its ambitious 100-point work plan to investigate the properties and assets of former state heads.

The Cabinet on Saturday decided to form a committee, the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA), to investigate the assets of senior political executives and high-ranking government officials in a phased manner.

The committee consists of experts in law, finance, revenue, and research. The CIAA will operate under the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

In the first phase, all those who held public offices after the 2006 Nepalese revolution, also known as the democracy movement, will be under scrutiny, and the commission will complete the investigation within 15 days.

Following this, the government has begun investigating the assets of four former prime ministers, Sher Bahadur Deuba, KP Sharma Oli, Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', and Madhav Kumar, My Republica reported.

In a related development, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) elected 'Prachanda' as the parliamentary party leader at a convention on Sunday.

'Prachanda' was elected to the House of Representatives from the Rukum West constituency in the elections held on March 5.

In a separate incident, the arrest of former energy minister and NC leader Deepak Khadka on Sunday in connection with a money laundering case is seen as an action by the CIAA.

The action against Khadka was taken after receiving the request from the Department of Money Laundering Investigation, The Kathmandu Post reported.

During the Gen Z protest last year, images and videos had surfaced showing burnt fragments of banknotes at the residences of Khadka and former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and 'Prachanda', it added.

The second phase of the probe will target all those who held crucial public positions between 1991 and 2006, the Kathmandu Post report added.

The panel, in the second phase, will probe the assets and properties of those holding crucial public positions between 1991 and 2006.

Earlier on Saturday, former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli was arrested after the Balendra Shah government implemented the probe commission report on the Gen Z protest that rocked the nation last year.

Based on the findings of the report, the government has announced the immediate initiation of investigations, legal action and procedural measures against those found responsible.
